When I started my journey in IT back in 2006, the daily reality for most IT teams was straightforward: we were professional firefighters.



Between 2006 and 2011, almost every organization I encountered treated IT as a reactive cost center. Whenever a server went down or a printer jammed, IT was called. But the "fires" weren't just technical—they were behavioral. End users viewed IT as an impediment, while IT viewed users as a constant source of operational chaos.

We were firmly stuck at Layer 1: Reactive IT Operations.

The Shift: From Support to Enabler

Around that period, I realized that if IT wanted a seat at the executive table, we had to change the narrative. We needed to evolve from an order-taker to a strategic enabler.

We systematically began transforming operations:

  1. Standardizing Processes (Layer 2): Moving away from ad-hoc fixes by creating clear documentation, repeatable service workflows, and consistent SLAs.

  2. Integrating Ecosystems (Layer 3): Replacing fragmented spreadsheets and isolated databases with interconnected platforms, turning manual processes into digital end-to-end flows for better data accuracy and timeliness.

  3. Visibility & Monitoring (Layer 4 & 5): Implementing continuous system monitoring, log tracking, automated alerts, and live operational dashboards.

Without realizing it back then, we were building our way up the maturity stack.

What Academics Got Right About IT Strategic Alignment

In academic literature, this transformation mirrors the classic Strategic Alignment Model (SAM) proposed by Henderson & Venkatraman (1993). Their research highlights that IT only creates true enterprise value when it moves from a passive Service Level perspective to a Technology Transformation and Competitive Potential driver.

Later maturity models—including CMMI and modern AIOps frameworks—reaffirm what we experienced in the field: you cannot automate what you haven't standardized, and you cannot predict what you cannot measure.

The Reality of Today's Enterprise Stack

Fast forward to today: many enterprises are aggressively pushing toward Layer 6 (Intelligent IT Operations) with AI-driven anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and machine learning insights. Some are even eyeing Layer 7 (Autonomous IT Systems).

However, field experience teaches us a critical lesson: reaching the top layer doesn't mean discarding the middle layers.

Even as we leverage AI and predictive algorithms, business continuity still heavily relies on Layer 5 and 6 baselines—real-time dashboards, automated alerts, and clear incident protocols. Layer 7 (Self-Healing Systems) sounds ideal, but without robust telemetry from Layers 4 and 5, autonomous decisions can introduce unmanaged risk.

Moving Forward

Leaving the "firefighting" era behind wasn't just about adopting newer software—it required shifting human behavior, establishing process discipline, and demonstrating how technology directly drives business outcomes.
