In IT Service Management (ITSM), Incident vs Problem vs Change is one of the most common (and costly) areas of confusion.

Here’s a simple burger-restaurant analogy that makes it stick:

🍔 1) Incident Management = “Fix it NOW”
A customer gets a burnt burger. Service is impacted right now.
Your priority is to restore service quickly (replace/refund).
Focus: speed, recovery, user experience.

🔍 2) Problem Management = “Why did this happen?”
The burnt burger keeps happening. You investigate and discover the grill temperature is set too high.
That’s Problem Management: root cause analysis (RCA) to stop repeat incidents.
Focus: prevention, trend analysis, root cause.

✅ 3) Change Management = “Fix it permanently (with control)”
Now you implement the fix: adjust grill settings + add monitoring + approvals + rollout plan.
That’s Change Management: a controlled, permanent improvement that removes the root cause.
Focus: risk management, approvals, planning, long-term stability.

How they connect:
Incident → restores service
Problem → identifies cause
Change → removes cause (sustainably)

A quick way to remember:
Incident = Pain | Problem = Cause | Change = Cure

Where does your organization struggle most: Problem investigation or Change execution?
